Mocha 7

Mocha VNC Lite is a free iPhone app to access your computer remotely. This article will show you how to set it up with Leopard's built-in VNC service with remote access using DynDNS. There's no need to install any VNC application like RealVNC nor a need for web services like LogMeIn or TechInline. This is Mac only.

First step is to go to your Mac's System Preferences -> Sharing.

Mocha 1

Enable Screen Sharing (I had to turn off Remote Management before I could toggle Screen Sharing).

Mocha 2

Press the Computer Settings... button and enable VNC viewers may control screen with password. Enter your new VNC password. While you're here note what IP address you have - where it says Other users can access your computer at vnc://your.ip.addre.ss (you'll need this later for port forwarding your router).

Next up is to go to DynDNS and make a new account. Don't worry, it's free and you get up to five hostnames. Login and Add Host Services.

Mocha 3

Here you get to come up with your own domain name to access your computer. For example you can have computer1.dyndns.org. This will be the address you use in Mocha VNC to access your computer. You don't need a Wildcard. Keep Host with IP address selected. Use the Use auto detect IP address button to find your IP address. I didn't select Mail Routing (no need).

Mocha 4

When you're all done press Create Host and you should now have a new domain name pointing to your computer.

Mocha 5

The next step, if you're behind a router (if there's no router go to the final step), is to forward ports to the appropriate computer. Login to your router, go to the Port Forwarding area and add a new Port Service.

Mocha 6

Give it a Name (VPN1), Type (TCP/UDP), Starting Port 5900 (Mocha Lite's default is 5900, for additional computers use different port numbers), Ending Port 5900 (same as starting port), and IP address (this is the IP address you got from step one's your.ip.addre.ss). Hit Apply or Save or whatever your router says.

The final step is to get your iPhone and Mocha VNC Lite installed and running. Add a New Connection and use the domain name you setup at DynDNS in Mocha VNC's Server IP address area (i.e. computer1.dyndns.org). Leave the Server Port default. Enter the VNC Password you used in step one's System -> Preferences -> Sharing -> Screen Sharing -> VNC Password. You can leave the rest of the buttons default (unless your using Mac OSX Server). Click Connect and if everything goes as planned you should be connected to your Mac.
