Elephants Dream is not too recent, but it's very noteworthy. Part of the Orange project sponsored by Blender, an open source 3D modeling app, this animation illustrates how you don't need a high priced program to make magic.

Zeitguised is a mo-graf firm in Germany who crank out some lovely work. A few animations worth noting are Winkelgeister and The Zoo.
Winkelgeister is a cool animation of some mischevious little shadow creatures accompanied by an awesome track. I don't know if I like the song or the animation more. The beat is Alle Dinge Leben (All Things Live) by the Quarks out of Berlin. Not the most amazing thing you'll ever see, but it does the trick.
